Truly Useful Products from the PGA Show in Orlando That We found and Liked and Needed to Share with You

Part 2
By: Dr. Barry Lotz and Leonard Finkel.

The Callaway RAZR Fit Fairway Wood

alt

Of all the clubs we saw at the Show and demoed, this club was one of the top three. There is something special about this fairway wood. In fact there are so many good features about this 155 cc steel headed club that the limited space allocated in this article does not do it justice.
Let me count the ways that this club outshines and outperforms the competition: It is long distance wise, it is remarkably easy to hit, it is aesthetically beautiful, it is accurate, it is adjustable through its Optifit Hosel which allows the user to set the face angle in either Open, Closed or Square positions to optimize ball flight, specifically the adjustable hosel allows you to change the loft up and down by a degree, a feature impressive in a fairway wood. Because the adjustability does change the face angle a fair amount ,the benefit is that you get the shot shape and face angle you prefer and to top it all off, the club performs remarkably well from both the tee or the fairway.
Unlike the driver, there are no adjustable weights in the RAZR Fit fairway wood. It is Callaway’s assertion and position that weights have little effect in heads of this size.
Additionally, Callaway’s VFT (Variable Face Technology) generates higher ball speeds for longer distance. This is a powerful club that together with the RAZR Fit driver discussed in Part 1 last month and Callaway’s HEX Black ball, gives the golfer a brilliant combination of distance, performance and accuracy that is second to none.
Available in a 3-Wood (15°) and a 5-Wood (18°),

Laser Link Switch Range Finder

alt

If you are looking for a fast and accurate distance measurement to a flag or bunker , there is no product on the market currently that out performs the new Laser Link Switch Rangefinder. Instead of fiddling with a Smart Phone or GPS “tool”, just point and shoot with the Laser Link Switch. This new rangefinder has two distinct modes controlled by one switch that seamlessly switches between modes.

In the first mode, the QuickShot, is for courses that have flagstick reflectors. The second mode, called the Red Hot, is used when there are no reflectors present and takes measurements from trees, flags bunkers, etc. The unit is powered by a 9-volt battery.

The range in QuickShot QS(reflector only) Mode is 400 yards while the range in Red Hot RH(no reflector) Mode is 900+ yards to a LLG reflector, and 500+ yards to a “non-reflector” object.

Pistol-shape — the “signature shape” of Laser Link rangefinders. The shape allows you to hold the unit away from your face, should you so desire, which eliminates the need to adjust/remove hat or sunglasses to use. The Switch is a little different in that the head of the unit is flat instead of curvy like previous designs. It takes up a little less “horizontal” space in/on a golf bag.

The unit will be available in May.

Golf Apps of America
alt

Golf Minnesota and their subsidiary Golf Apps of America had a successful introduction of their Smartphone apps at the PGA Show. Versions are live on the iPhone app store and Android Market in 16 states with several more on the way. The apps function as course locators and directories with some extremely unique functions that include opening websites, photos, and for some of the top courses, a brief video overview of the course. Video instruction tips from top PGA pros, including Tom Watson, are included for the iPhone users. You’ll never again need to look for a course phone number, or get lost trying to find a golf course, and you’ll always know what courses are nearby. It’s terrific for the traveling golfer.
If you want to purchase any of their complete directory apps for AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, MA, MI, MN, NC, NM, NV, NY, OR, SC, TX, WA, it is recommended you install this FREE app first. You will then have easy access to the individual state apps through an In- App Purchase via the iTunes store.
Golf America is the introductory app and is free. This app introduces you to the functions of the comprehensive state golf apps.

Travelling with golf clubs through airports is tough to say the least. Do yourself a favor and lighten the load using this travel cover. The Boccieri Secret Grip

Most conventional golf grips weigh 52 grams each. This grip is built with a tungsten weight and clocks in at 92 grams! If you have heard of Tour Lock, this is the instant version. Both Tour Lock and the Secret Grip, by their weight, raise the balance point of the club, which is designed to promote better body mechanics and afford you the ability to drop the club “into the slot”.

It will also improve your control, distance and consistency according to the inventor, Steve Boccieri, of Heavy Putter fame.

One of many Tour Pros who subscribe to back-weighting is Sergio Garcia, who back-weights all 14 clubs in his bag.

MSRP: $18.00 per grip www.boccierigolf.com

Odyssey FLIP Putter

Callaway has either added new golf addicted scientists and engineers to their development staff, changed the water supply, or simply awakened from a deep slumber.

Their new products, especially the RAZR Fit Driver, the RAZR Fit #3 Wood, the HEX Black Ball and the Odyssey FLIP putter, have been the best to date, probably since the original Big Bertha introductions to the golf world.

This new putter, available in three different models (Odyssey 1, 5 and 9), has two face plate options to choose from – the Metal X insert and the more traditional White Ice. You can switch them by literally pulling the toe and heel apart, and flipping the face over in less than 30 seconds — there are no parts to remove whatsoever!

Why switch the face? Simply because you can, depending on the speed of the green, adjust your feel and performance of the putter to your liking or course conditions.
With regard to the Metal-X Insert: This lightweight aluminum outer layer utilizes oval depressions to maximize the Coefficient of Friction, which helps quickly generate straighter topspin for reduced skidding and the truest roll in the game. The Urethane inner layer provides soft feel and saves weight to optimize performance.
As to the White Ice Insert: This is a Multi-layer insert that has been fine-tuned to enhance responsiveness, sound, resiliency and consistency. Here the inner core enhances the feel and resiliency which in turn leads to consistent distance control. Face surface has been roughened to enhance the sound at impact with softer golf balls and increase friction to promote forward roll.
The Satin Chrome Finish provides a premium, elegant and beautiful look that is favored by Tour players.
Shown in the photo is the Flip Face 5 model. This is a rounded mallet with a single-bend shaft and full-shaft offset.
Available in April.

Bridgestone Golf

For 2012 Bridgestone has introduced four new ball models (TOUR B330, TOUR B330-S, TOUR B330-RX and TOUR B330-RXS) and already has a win on Tour (Brandt Snedeker at The Farmer’s Insurance Tournament at Torrey Pines).

As a result of the dramatic cover change to Bridgestone’s proprietary Dual Dimple Technology in all four models, the new B330 family of balls will be easily distinguishable from their predecessors. This Dual Dimple Technology, in part, helped Snedeker negotiate Torrey Pines’ coastal breezes in the final round, leading to a remarkable 17 out of 18 greens in regulation.

Each of the four new B330 family of balls offer their own distinct features that have allowed Bridgestone engineers to improve upon the previous versions in terms of feel/spin, distance and durability. For specific technology info on each of the new balls, visit the company’s web site.

The new B330 balls feature a street price of $44.99 per dozen (MSRP $56.00 per dozen) and are available now at select golf courses and golf specialty and sporting goods retailers nationwide.

TaylorMade R11s Drivers

TaylorMade’s R11s driver is 20cc bigger, faster, more tunable and 4 to 10 yards longer than the original R11. With 3D Tuning, you can independently tune loft, face angle and flight path your swing. The 460cc matte-white finish head features a ±3° flight control technology sleeve, 5-way adjustable sole plate and TaylorMade’s movable weight technology, allowing the R11s Driver to be tuned for 89 different launch settings. Changing the weights alters the center of gravity by 4mm from heel to toe promoting up to 20 yards of side-to-side bias. The driver is further enhanced by TaylorMade’s Inverted Cone Technology that expands the COR zone, or the portion of the club that delivers faster ball speeds.

MSRP: $399.00. The R11s TP has 26 upgraded shaft choices and costs $499.00

TaylorMade RocketBallz Tour 3-wood

The COR or trampoline effect of TaylorMade RocketBallz woods is at the legal limit imposed by USGA. According to the company, these are the first and only steel-faced fairway woods to achieve that status. As a result, these clubs are some of the hottest in golf, featuring a carved-out channel called a Speed Pocket. Located directly behind the face, it increases ball velocity and yardage by promoting more flex in the club’s face and sole at impact. According to TaylorMade’s research, most golfers hit woods and hybrids low on the face, so TaylorMade decided to position the weight plug low and forward, where it would help players hit a higher, faster ball with less spin and more carry. This non-adjustable weight plug is located just behind the Speed Pocket.
The loft for the new TS (Tour Strong) 3-wood is 13 degrees. On Tour, most of the pros are using a 15 degree model simply because the 13-degree goes too far!

Ogio’s “Chamber” Cart Bag

If you are looking for less noise from the knocking of clubs emanating from your golf bag, this highly stylistic cart bag is the answer.

This well designed 9-lb bag is elegant, handsome and classic looking, but its main USP (Unique Selling Proposition) is the company’s new Silencer club protection system, which uses 14 individual compartments with teeth-like openings that center and gently hold the club shaft, keeping them from banging together like so many pots and pans.

The protective membrane top and compression fit bottom of the Chamber bag greatly minimize club movement, resulting in less clanks and dings. This added security extends both the life and look of your clubs.

The zipper less ball pocket, ergonomic handle and lift grip all assist your overall experience by adding convenience and ease. Many of the features included are a Translucent Silencer base, easy access divot and pencil sleeve pocket and a custom ergonomic 3-point handle. I like the ease of use of the snap on, zippered rain cover and the 9 pockets,8 of which are zippered.

There are weather-resistant fleece lined valuables’ pockets, a glove/putter cover velcro attachment strip, and a deluxe over-padded single shoulder strap.

The insulated cooler pocket and elastic oversized towel loop work well, as does the lift grip molded trunk handle. There are also useful integrated tee holders, an internal cell phone pocket, an umbrella containment system and a shoulder strap stash loop.

Available in Black Tech or Charcoal Burst (shown in photo).

Tour Edge Exotics XCG5 Fairway Wood

Tour Edge Exotics XCG5 fairway wood is power redefined. Featuring an innovative beta titanium cup face and heavy tungsten sole plate brazed to a titanium body, it’s the only fairway wood on the market to use a titanium cupped face and tungsten sole. Titanium offers exceptional distance while tungsten allows for a smaller, more traditional‐sized head with a lower center of gravity. This high‐octane 11.5 degree loft combination delivers driver‐like distance and remarkable forgiveness. Brazing is utilized when the highest‐quality joint is required and is performed inside a vacuum chamber over several hours, greatly reducing stress through slower heating and cooling cycles. This significantly improves the thermal and mechanical properties of the material for longer, better feeling shots. A Boomerang face design offers multiple levels of variable face thickness that maximizes the rebound effect from more points on the face that produce a hotter launch, even on off center hits.
MSRP: $299.99 www.touredgegolf.com
Tour Edge Exotics XCG5 Driver
The Tour Edge Exotics XCG5 driver’s advanced head design delivers thoroughbred power in three shaft options: a superultra‐light Graphite Design Tour AD 271‐ gram, Fujikura BLUR 306‐gram and Aldila RIP 312‐gram versions. Unique to golf, the XCG5’s special beta titanium crown material is ultra‐thin and lighter than the previous carbon crown found in the XCG4. This material dramatically improves sound while allowing weight to be added to the rear of the sole via a Six‐Point Perimeter Weighting System. This system lowers the center of gravity and moves it deeper and further back in the sole for longer, more forgiving drives. To maximize spring‐like effect, Tour Edge increased the XCG5’s face size by 12% over previous models. By thinning and thickening the face, the v‐shaped boomerangs allow for the maximum elongation of the titanium for enhanced feel and hotter launch.

SkyCaddie SGXw – Wi-Fi enabled
SkyGolf has unveiled the next generation SkyCaddie – the Wi-Fi enabled SkyCaddie SGXw. With its new wireless capabilities, the SGXw provides the convenience of “on the go” access to the most accurate and up-to-date course maps, eliminating inaccuracy issues so common with preloaded courses in other rangefinders. The SGXw connects wirelessly to SkyGolf’s vast library of precision courses via Wi-Fi at home, office, golf course or hotspot for fast, easy course downloads of the same complete and reliable course information professional golfers receive from their caddies and their yardage books. The SGXw can even utilize many smart phones to gain Internet access as a “personal hotspot.” The SGXw delivers game changing, stroke saving features, including Dynamic RangeVue, designed for smarter and easier club selection. RangeVue’s preset yardage arcs adjust dynamically over fairway landing areas and greens to allow golfers to quickly select the best club for every shot. RangeVue provides information faster and more reliably than a laser rangefinder without aiming or requiring line of sight. PinPoint Technology allows golfers to measure to the hole by adding pin positions. Combined with its IntelliGreen feature, golfers have yardages they need to the front carry, back, center and hole locations automatically, from any angle of approach. PinPoint eliminates the need for line of sight and the frustration golfers have with aiming and keeping a laser steady. The powerful combination of PinPoint and Intelligreen will help golfers avoid greenside bunkers, hit more greens and sink more birdie putts.

Instruction Area Gof Tips and Tricks

Having problems with your swing? – Fix your slice! by Johnny Miller

I recently was examining swing sequences of some of the greatest players in history. Knowing that some of these players favored a draw as their standard shot while others preferred a fade, I sought to identify swing features within each group that would explain their respective ball-flight tendencies. Something profound emerged that I think will benefit all golfers, especially those cursed with a wicked slice.

What I found was this: Virtually every accomplished fader of the ball–from Jack Nicklaus to Tiger Woods–displayed a straight left arm at the top of the backswing. Conversely, those who preferred a draw–players like Arnold Palmer and Bobby Jones–maintained a slight bend at the elbow.

This discovery is great news for most slicers, as they tend to do by accident what intentional faders do on purpose. In this article I’ll explain why the dynamic works, and how a simple swing change will make a powerful draw your standard shot.
