The Smart Path To Better golf

       Dealing with on course troubles

BY GEOFF GREIG

1. Relax the Body
At the first sign of trouble our natural reaction is to tighten up and try to control the club to control the flight of the ball. Proper tempo and timing are impossible to achieve with tight muscles. Take a few deep breaths and do some gentle stretches. Contract and release the muscles in your hands, arms and shoulders until you can feel yourself loosening up, then let it fly.

2. Clear the Mind
A cluttered mind makes for a confused golf swing. Use your mind to get ready for the shot then turn your mind off and swing the club with your body. Avoid the tendency to over analyze the mechanics of your swing on the course, swing work is for the range. Pick one target oriented swing thought and stick with it.

3. Positive Focus
What you focus on is what you get, so make sure to focus on exactly what you want. If you focus on the things you did wrong in your previous swing you will get more of the same. If you focus on the potential trouble in your next shot you will most certainly find it. If we desire success and enjoyment on the golf course our focus must always be positive and in the present. Focus your mind solely on what will get the job done for the shot you are playing now.

We all get into trouble on the golf course but, only you can determine whether your mind will dig you into a deeper hole or get you back on The Smart Path.

Until next time.
